Why should I care about my bone health?
Osteoporosis! Osteoporosis is a non-painful condition where, over time, bones become weaker, thinner and fragile due to a reduction in the quality and quantity of bone.
Did you know that:
∗27% of women and 11% of men over the age of 60 have osteoporosis?
∗One in three women will develop osteoporosis in their lifetime?
∗66% of Australian’s older than 50 years have poor bone health?
In women, osteoporosis accounts for more days in hospital than breast cancer, heart attack, diabetes, and many other diseases. Osteoporosis significantly increase the risk of breaking a bone (fracture) which can lead to many negative impacts on a persons life including persistent pain, significant disability, reduced independence and reduced life expectancy.
Osteoporosis is often not diagnosed until a fracture occurs which means opportunities for treatment and prevention were not utilised in time. Therefore early intervention is important to improve your bone health before it’s too late.

So how do I improve my bone health?
Exercise!
The Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) guidelines for osteoporosis suggest exercise is effective and safe in improving bone health and is one of the most powerful tools we have in treating osteoporosis.
ESSA recommends incorporating three types of exercise for the best results;
1) Resistance training – Yes weights and it has to be quite challenging. Our osteopath will tailor your program to you. Don’t worry we will gradually build you up with safe progressions to allow you build up.
2) Impact loading – things like jumps, hops. We build you up to this in controlled situations.
3) Balance training – starting with more support and gradually building towards less support.
Is it safe?
Yes all are lots of studies on this all reported weight training was safe when people were gradually progressed to doing a little bit more each session.
