Stress can come in many forms and and affect the body in many ways. People typically associate stress with negative situations like running late a meeting, family problems, losing a job etc. But stress can also occur when we do not get enough sleep, overtrain, work too hard or have bad posture. Stress causes all sorts of changes to the body including;
- tension in your muscles and joints
- clenching jaw
- the release of ‘stress hormones’ like epinephrine and cortisol
- Increase in blood pressure
- increase in breathing rate
- heartburn, stomach cramps, poor digestion
Fatigue or lack of sleep can have some very negative effects on the body. Everyone is different, but on average adults should be getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Children and teenagers should be closer to 10hours. If you consistently get less sleep, you could suffer from the following;
- increased irritability
- reduced reaction time
- poor memory poor concentration
- increased muscle sensitivity
- reduced resilience to external stresses
- poor judgement
- more accidents/injuries
