What are FODMAP's?

FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols)  are short chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols, that are found in the foods we consume on a regular basis.

When they are poorly absorbed by our small intestines they continue down along to the large intestine. When the food molecules get to here, they become a food source for the normal bacteria that live in our gut. When our the bacteria thrive off these short chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols, symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) may become noticeable.

Examples of common FODMAPs:

·         Lactose: when the body struggles to absorb milk sugar; which is found commonly is dairy product such as milk, yogurt and ice cream.

·         Fructose: when the body poorly absorbs fruit sugar; which is found commonly in fruit, some vegetables, and high-fructose foods such as onion, corn syrup, and honey.

 

Common Symptoms Include:

-Abdominal discomfort

-Abdominal bloating

-Nausea

-Diarrhoea

-Constipation
